Stowe Mercantile is expanding again. Our women’s apparel has done so well we’re expanding it into more space and we have several positions available immediately.  Applicants must be willing to work hard, be very personable, truly enjoy working with the public and love clothing!   Full Time & Part Time positions available, health insurance for full time positions, weekend & holiday incentive pay, dramatic merchandise discounts and more. All positions include 1 weekend day. Stop in at Stowe Mercantile for applications or email us your resume at info@stowemercantile.com

  • Discounts and Privileges for Staff Members of Sherman Enterprises Inc.
  • This compilation of discounts, privileges and benefits dated January 1, 2007, supersedes all other documentation related to this subject.
  • Health Insurance is available to employees who are hired on a full time, full year basis. Full time is defined as working a minimum of 38 hours per week. Sherman Enterprises will pay the full premium of the basic health insurance policy for the staff member. Any additional premium for additional coverage or family members is the responsibility of the employee. Coverage is available after the first 90 days of employment.
  • During the first 3 months of employment, new staff members receive a discount of 15% off all merchandise in the store.
  • After 3 months, merchandise may be purchased at 40% off foods and candy and at 50% off items in the rest of the store. At times, this policy may change for individual products and therefore the discount may be changed from time to time at the owner’s and or at the manager’s discretion.
  • These discounts are available to all staff in any store and apply to all merchandise in any Sherman Enterprises Inc store. Remember, all staff purchases are to be conducted with the manager or assistant manager of the store, with our book keeper or with Marc.
  • You are entitled to a 15% discount at Bear Pond Books, Vermont Furniture Works & Jamie’s on Main.
  • You are also entitled to discounts of up to 50% off rack rates at The Green Mountain Inn on rooms. These arrangements must be made through Marc and the Inn.
  • You are entitled to 10% off food at The Whip Restaurant at the Green Mountain Inn. (Excludes alcohol) You must mention this prior to ordering your meal at The Whip Restaurant.
  • You are entitled to discounts at area merchants and restaurants that are members of Stowe Area Association. Inside your Stowe Area Association membership card, you will find a list of all the member businesses that offer discounted goods and services.

Marc Money:

Marc Money is issued to reward, recognize and surprise a staff member who has done something outstanding. When you have Marc Money you would like to redeem, it must be with the store manager or our book keeper.

For weekend hours:

Any scheduled hours worked during Saturday and Sunday, a $3.00 per hour increase will be added to your normal pay rate. This is to recognize the inconvenience of sometimes working weekend hours and the fact that it is appreciated when anyone works weekend shifts.

For the following holidays:

  • Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, (the Monday observance) Columbus Day, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day, day after Christmas, New Years Day, your birthday
  • For the above 11 holidays, a premium pay rate of time and a half of your base wage; not the weekend differential rate will be paid. Again, you have to be working a normally scheduled shift for this premium.
  • The store is closed Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, & Christmas Day. These three holidays are paid holidays. If you are regularly scheduled to work on any or all of these three days, you will be paid for those regularly scheduled hours at your standard base wage or weekend rate but not the time an half overtime rate.
  • On Town Meeting Day, everyone is allowed time off to attend their Town Meeting. If you are not going to attend your Town Meeting, then you are expected to work your normally scheduled shift. If you do attend your Town Meeting, once it concludes, you are expected to come into work for the remainder of your shift.

New Hire Referral Bonus:

Any current staff member that refers an individual to us during any of our employee searches is entitled to a $100.00 referral bonus! The only condition is the person you hire must successfully pass the 30 and 60 day training reviews. Once the new hire has passed these, you’ll receive your bonus. Easy Money!

Sales Gain Incentive Program:

Each year; Marc and the manager will develop a budget for sales and expenses that will create the desired profit for the year. This program rewards all hourly staff members if sales exceed the budgeted monthly amount. The percentages may change from year to year but the basics of the program are that during any month that sales exceed the sales goal; a percentage of those sales are pooled. The total number of hours that all hourly staff worked for the month are divided into the dollars in the pool to arrive at an hourly bonus pay rate. Then each staff member receives their sales gain bonus based on the number of hours they worked that month.

Monthly Sales goal: $45,000
Actual Month’s sales: $55,000
Total Sales over goal: $10,000
Random pool % (15%) $1,500 
Total number of hours
Everyone worked: 1000

$1,500 divided by 1000 hrs = $1.50 bonus rate
Full Time staff work 160 hours in 1 month, therefore: 160 hrs x $1.50 = $240.00
A bonus Sales Gain Incentive check for $240 will be issued

All percentages, sales goals, and other factors are variable by management and management reserves the right to modify this program as needed at any time

Whether local folks are stopping by to pick out gifts or to treat themselves to the candy table; or tourists who visit for the first time (or maybe on their annual visit) everyone seems to enjoy the continually changing merchandise and old time general store feel here.
